In The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, by Robert Stevenson, the main character Jekyll, makes choices he says are “unconscious"(page 98), because of the stress and pressure of having a good reputation. His careless choices ultimately lead to him losing control of his life and he ends up killing himself. His love for a good reputation, causes Jekyll to make terrible decisions. reputation is expressed through its dangers and by showing how the pressure of having a good reputation can lead to someone's downfall because of the quick thoughtless decisions people make to keep their good reputation. Before Jekyll first turns into Hyde he isn’t happy with his life. He wants to do things for his pleasure, but will ultimately ruin his reputation. He turns into Hyde so he can do the pleasures he wants to do and when Jekyll is telling his statement on why he originally turned into Hyde, he says, “Hence it came about that I concealed my pleasures;”(page 85). Jekyll has a good life but he finds it hard to stay happy because he can’t do the desires he gets. When it says, “Jekyll was no worse”, it means that Hyde was the one who did all the physical action, but since Jekyll knew what was going on and didn't say anything it makes him as bad. Jekyll wanted to live a double life and do all the bad things he wanted to do as Hyde so he doesn't ruin his reputation. Even though Jekyll didn’t physically do anything so he wouldn’t ruin his reputation he still did something wrong. When people found out about the murder Hyde committed they blamed Jekyll.
