The most beautiful haunted castles and palaces in Austria

Maybe every castle has it's own ghost stories and today I would like to introduce you to some Austrian ones that are said have definitely more then one ghost. Some of them have even been tried and tested by international ghosthunter-teams. Of course I cannot guarantee you your own ghost sighting, when visiting any of those places. But the stories and legends you find here will for sure spike your imagination.

Moosham Castle in Salzburg The Moosham Castle in the Salzburgian region called Lungau is said to be one of the most haunted castles in Austria, if not in the whole world. It was first documented in 1191 and it's foundations were built on the remainders of a Roman fort. The Prince-archbishops of Salzburg were the owners of Moosham for centuries. Some say the White Lady must be the ghost of Cathalina Frescobaldi, one of the former castle-owners Italian wife. The legend tells about her being caught in betraying her husband with his secretary. The Count stabbed his rival and mured his wife into one of the castle's towers. When she appeared to him after her own death, he got so scared that he dropped dead on the spot. The White Lady of Bernstein is also especially well documented in literature, there have been parapsychological investigations and apparently she is still seen at the castle every once in while.

And then there is also Red Ivan: His story dates back to the 13th century, the Count of Güssing, Johann von Héder, who was notorious for his cruelty in the whole region. He is mostly known as the Red Ivan nowadays and can easily be recognized by his red vest, flame-red hair and beard. He mainly engages in scaring the people who live in the castle and the guests.
