Alcatraz housed some of the most notorious criminal, but there wasn’t any successful escapes. Alcatraz was known for its harsh rules, and zero chance of escape. The prison held the baddest criminals in the world, none were reported to escape. Escape from Alcatraz was practically impossible due to the fact that the whole island is guarded, surrounded by water, and so cold that you could easily get hypothermia. Frank Morris was a criminal since the age of thirteen. Morris was able to escape from multiple prisons. “In 1960, Federal officials decided that his pattern of escape attempts, termed as "shotgun freedom" (Alcatraz) He was able to escape from any prison that he went to. The BOP decided to send him to Alcatraz. Along with him were brother Clarence and John Anglin. The brothers were doing time for bank robbery, and attempted escapes from multiple prisons. Their plan was to dig a hole to the ceiling, shimmy down to the ground, take their raft to the water and escape. They were going to go to San Francisco and steal a car. Then, burglarize a clothes store. Afterwords, the men were to go in different directions. They brought Allen West into the plan. Allen West was able to get a vacuum motor, and made a makeshift drill to get through the wall. The men made a raft out of stolen raincoats. Alcatraz was a very well run prison, with a very low chance of escaping. Each year, hundreds of athletes participate in the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon, proving that (with training and proper gear) it is possible to swim from Alcatraz and survive. Not one of the prisoners were able to do
