April 13, 1970 was the night the oxygen tank in Apollo 13 exploded, 55 hours, 55 minutes away from Earth. If Apollo 13 was any further away at the time of the incident, the astronauts most likely would’ve not survived. The issue was that the O2 tank was not designed properly by the manufacturer, and that when they conducted a stir of the O2 tank it exploded. Dunbar, Brian. " Apollo 13."
Introduction- Thesis Statement: Millions of people around the country tuned in to watch the Challenger shuttle launch on January 28, 1986. However, only seventy-three seconds into the launch, the shuttle exploded. The Challenger crew was composed of seven astronauts including the first teacher in space, the second American woman, the second African American man, and the first Asian American in space. Three major effects of the Challenger explosion include the investigation of NASA safety procedures, new innovations in shuttle design and composition, and an attempt from NASA to further reduce risk during spaceflight.
On January 28th, 1986, the United States was devastated by the Challenger Disaster. Because of the importance of space exploration at the time, the Challenger was covered heavily in the media. The addition of the first regular civilian to ever be in space was an exciting possibility to many of the American people. The launch was televised and because of the popularity millions of people were watching all over the nation. The stunned American people were absolutely devastated by the explosion.
The speaker Ayn Rand, was incredibly passionate throughout the entire commentary. She addresses the fundamental significance of Apollo 11, stating that it is not political; it is philosophical. The audience for this particular situation would be anyone who enjoys commentaries. This publication was created by Rand, for the sole purpose of putting forward her philosophy of objectivism. The subject of this commentary was to talk about mankind itself, and how Apollo 11 completely redefined what it means to be a human.
During Apollo 13, there was an explosion that caused them to barely make it back to Earth. During our space unit in 5th grade, we watched the movie Apollo 13. Now, I know more about the commander of Apollo 13. Others who also watched Apollo 13 have a connection to James Lovell as well. In this mission, he had to persevere and keep trying
In 1957, Sputnik 1 was launched into space. It was the world’s first artificial satellite, created by the Soviet Union, and was the object that began the Space Race. The launch of this satellite came as an unpleasant surprise to the United States (“The Space Race”). Less than a month later, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 2, which carried a dog, Laika, in it (“6 Key Events of the Space Race”). A year later, in 1958, the United States retaliated by launching Explorer 1.
Apollo 13 is an award winning movie starring Tom Hanks and Kevin bacon that was release in June 1995. As a historical movie, many people like to think that just because it’s based on a past event the movie is granted unquestioned accuracy. Well, Apollo 13 is actually very historically accurate in its events and the setting, both outside of Earth and on Earth, but it does have a few inaccuracies in portraying the characters but were put in to make the film more interesting than the actual Apollo mission of the early 70’s. The crew of the Apollo 13 mission, both at central control and the lunar module, were depicted very differently than how they actually behaved.
The 1986 Challenger space shuttle crash was a horrific event. Seven crew members: Michael Smith, Dick Scobee, Judith Resnik, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Gregory Jarvis and Christa McAuliffe all lost their lives 73 seconds after liftoff. The Challenger space shuttle crashed due to the failure of the primary O-ring. Basically, the O-ring failed and didn’t seal in time due to low temperatures. The president at the time was Ronald Reagan.
Questions about the 1969 moon landing 1. Where were you when it happened? 2. Was you happy or sad? 3.
One of the greatest space mission is the third mission to land on the Moon, Apollo 13. The Apollo 13 mission to the moon may have been the most miraculous event in history. Not only were the astronauts able to make it through any obstacle they faced, but they used their intellect in every situation. After getting through all the phases of getting through space, such as releasing certain parts of the shuttle and preparing their landing craft, they realize something’s wrong. Their oxygen tanks exploded!
With the astronauts on the “moon”, Richard Nixon speaks with Neil Armstrong and tells him that he is proud of them and that this is a defining moment in American history and this will go down as one of the greatest feats in United States history. The sole thing that will help determine whether or not the greatest space achievement in human history is true or false is time. With time, we will be able to fully explain what happened on July 20,
Moreover, the film made it appear as if the vital procedures performed were wholly new to everyone, it dramatized this for the reason to communicate to the public about how hard they had to work on determining exactly what to do. For instance, when the explosion of the oxygen tanks occurred and caused damage to the Carbon Dioxide levels everyone had to quickly develop a procedure of what the crew needs to do, or else the crew would not survive. As a result, came the well-known “let’s build a filter scene”, where the on-duty engineers gathered all the materials that the crew retained on the spacecraft and dumped it on a table to ultimately make the necessary carbon dioxide filter with the limited items. It is true that the explosion and the needed filter took place, but in spite of that Thomas Mattingly stated that every procedure done in Apollo 13 has been done before in somewhere in all the simulations; furthermore, there was already a stimulation for Apollo 8 where they needed to make a carbon dioxide filter, so they called up Joe Kerwin and were informed how to construct the filter (Write, Rebecca.) Thus, it was straightforward procedure for Apollo 13 that took no less than a hour, in comparison to the movie which it took the engineers an extensive amount of time to assemble the
I. America United and Divided A. Most of Nixon’s later life comprised of politics, he became bitter when he was defeated by other nominees, he promised his people a more united nation and hope, but his presidency was merely a disaster II. The Miracles of 1969 A. Summer of 1969, John F. Kennedy’s desire to land on the moon was accomplished by NASA B. A disaster that occurred on 1967 was the death of three astronauts, there was an accident where the capsule they were placed in exploded C. Nail Armstrong took off to the moon and he became the first man to step foot on the moon, this occurred on July 20, there was approximately 500 million people waiting to find out through the radio and television D. He collected a great amount of pictures of the moon and he
In a time of separation and unrest, the United States needed to be a united front against a common enemy with a common goal. The United States used the technological advances in space exploration and the rivalry with the Soviet Union to unite the citizens when tension was great among them. Space exploration milestones that occurred in the 1960s were important to the sense of pride of United States citizens. The Atlas Program and the Apollo Program were major successes in the eyes of the United States and set them apart from their opponent in the space race, the Soviet Union. Space exploration was very important to the 1960s because amongst the chaos of the revolutionary decade, the government was still able to boost morale and restore people’s
When Neil Armstrong first touched down on the moon in 1969, millions of people watched him take the first step and create history (Villard). Yet even as we’ve moved on from the moon landings and consider them as a pivotal point for mankind, “Forty years after U.S. astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the moon, many conspiracy theorists still insist the Apollo 11 moon landing was an elaborate hoax”(Than). The idea that our voyage to the moon was deliberately staged seems to resurface year after year. While the conspiracy theorists claim the moon landing was a hoax, creating a fake moon landing would have been more expensive and difficult than actually reaching the moon. The race to the moon began on October 5, 1957, when the Soviet Union launched Sputnik into orbit around the earth: “When the Soviet Union launched the satellite Sputnik, on October 4, 1957, the United States experienced a technological identity crisis”(Olson).
