“The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC), as part of the criminal justice system and respecting the rule of law, contributes to public safety by actively encouraging and assisting offenders to become law-abiding citizens, while exercising reasonable, safe, secure and humane control (CSC Values Statement, 2016). In regards to the CSC values mission statement, in this general case, they did not fully succeed in what their value missions statement had said. Often in this Ashley Smith case it will always refer back to CSC’s values mission statement to see if CSC actually followed through with what their expectations were in the Justice System and how they could of handled Ashley Smith in more of a humane approach. This case within the Justice …show more content…
One specific point, was the behaviour of some of the Correctional Officer’s that were responding to Ashley Smith’s cell. There was incident showed on the fifth estate that stated there was a Correctional Officer outside of Ashley Smith’s cell that was banging and kicking the door yelling “Are you dead yet?”. This Correctional Officer was watching what Ashley was doing in her cell but never took it upon himself to call for back up and enter the cell to stop what was going on. In result, this was an ongoing occurrence for Ashley to actively act out, and I can notice as to why Officer’s were getting agitated by this but the behaviour that went on from an Officer is not appropriate. It’s most definitely challenging working with mental health inmates and they require a lot of assistance, but if something was going on to cause harm to Ashley then this Officer should of called for back up to enter the cell. Specific intervention that should of taken place was that the Officer should called for back up, instead of using inappropriate behaviour in front of Ashley. That wasn’t the appropriate way to handle the situation especially involving someone who is at harm of either themselves or surrounding …show more content…
CSC could of stepped in when exactly that was happening, or seen her cut off parts of her gown to use it in ways of to harm herself. Although, according to cbc Officers removed ligatures from her neck at least six or seven times a day (Timeline: The Life & Death of Ashley Smith - Blog - the fifth estate, 2016). I can believe that CSC was obviously doing their job to remove ligatures from her neck that many times a day, although why is that she constantly has access to things that she can rip off and use to harm herself, so that CSC has to constantly enter the cell to remove it from her neck. If her gown was a constant issue for her to harm herself, can CSC not find an alternate gown that can not be ripped for suicidal inmates, so that this doesn't happen. Specific intervention that should of happened was that Ashley was put on suicide watch 24/7 no matter how many times she would have cloths and would try to tie them around her neck, an Officer should of stepped in with back up, of course. Another option would be to have a suicide gown that can not be cut, ripped because that was a huge issue as to why she was tying ligatures around her
