Harper Lee spent 6 to 12 hours a day for roughly 3 years writing the novel To Kill A Mockingbird. She finally ended up publishing the novel in the year 1960. Harper Lee once stated that “The book to read is is not the one that thinks for you but the one which makes you think.” The only book she wrote won the Pulitzer Prize and is ranked as the top selling novel of all time. Harper Lee developed several remarkable characters in her book To Kill A Mockingbird. Many of these characters are immensely courageous but there is one that stands out the most, Atticus Finch. Atticus is the most open minded, unfearful, and responsible character in To Kill A Mockingbird written by Harper Lee. Atticus finch displays the most open mindedness in To Kill A Mockingbird. Atticus said “In this country our courts are the great levelers, and in our courts all men are created equal” (Lee 205). Atticus is incredibly unlike the rest of the population in Maycomb County. He treats every person the same unlike most of the people in his town. Atticus is frowned upon for valuing everyone equally but he does what he thinks is right. Atticus shows his bravery when he defended Tom Robinson with all his will even the whole town will turn on him and his family. He goes out of his way and waits patiently outside the jail where Tom Robinson is being held captive. He realizes that the cluster of men will try to come for Tom. He defends Tom even though he knows that he could possibly get beaten and lose his life. After the mob leaves Atticus said “Get some sleep, Tom. They won't bother you anymore” (Lee 155).
