In lieu of a dramatic, unrealistic resolution against this widespread mindset, Robinson 's team was able to set aside their differences and unify with him. Robinson’s victory was in proving to the world that African American people can perform at the same level as other Americans and should be treated as such. The question becomes whether or not the film was able to entertain the viewer through all these common pitfalls. Against the odds, I feel the film was very successful in that right. It was able to summarize a remarkable margin, within 1945-1947, of an American hero who will be remembered, even independent of the film, for
The 2000 film Remember the Titans does an amazing job with the extreme social issue of discrimination. In the film, Herman Boone had just been hired to be the new football coach of T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia. The school had just been told to integrate so the whites and blacks all go to the same school now, as well as go on the same bus. Coach Boone and the former head coach Bill Yoast both go up to football camp with the new team. While they are up there, the team learns the meaning of working as a team no matter what color you are.
Washington became the chief black advisor to President’s Roosevelt and Taft; moreover, Washington was the first African-American to ever be invited to the White House. Despite the fact that racism was rife within the whole country, both Presidents accepted Washington through his accommodating and submissive stance. Yet despite such advances Washington sill attracted many critics. Civil Right activist William Monroe Trotter contested Washington’s political dominance and vociferously opposed what he believed were Washington’s racially appeasing policies. He used the Boston Literary and Historical Association, an organisation he founded to attract likely adversaries of Washington, recruiting W.E.B. DuBois, to further this cause.
Denzel Washington who played Coach Boone leads the Titans to a successful football season by showing leadership and dedication towards his football players. The movie is about the path and mind of the football players as they are forced to play on an integrated football team. In Oliver Gruner essay, You’re Only as Good as Your Last Game: Remember the Titans Remembers Civil Rights suggests that the “film depicts the struggle for civil rights in the South as an ongoing process, one which is not isolated to a signal narrow historical epoch. Furthermore, this struggle is shown to require the active involvement of both African American and white characters, and thus avoids the singular tales of “white redemption” that are said to have been common to the “civil rights cinema” of the 1980s and 1990s (Leiter, 33)”.
In the movie Remember the Titans we are able to see many disputes, especially between white and black people. Despite the racial problem, there is a very memorable
The film, Eyes on the Prize: Fighting Back, Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas is put to the test. During the Supreme Court case of Brown Vs The Board of Education, many people fought for schools to end segregation of the students. This means that black and white students would attend the same schools together. The Supreme Court case made its final decision and made it illegal to segregate students. Central High School was the school that let black students in first.
When arguing for racial equality, James Farmer Jr. quotes St.Augustine, “An unjust law is no law at all.” He claims that just laws are meant to protect all citizens; whereas, unjust laws that discriminate Negroes are not laws to be followed, thus raising awareness of racial discrimination by using emotional and logical appeals. In The Great Debaters, Henry Lowe appeals to the audience’s emotions during a debate about Negro integration into state universities. To challenge his opponent’s claim that the South isn 't ready to integrate Negroes into universities, he affirms that if change wasn’t forcefully brought upon the South, Negroes would “still be in chains,” which is an allusion to slavery. With this point, he is able to raise awareness of
Martin Luther King Jr., an African-American activist, once said, “It may be true that the law cannot make a man love me, but it can keep him from lynching me, and I think that’s pretty important.” In the Jim Crow South in the 1930s, the setting of the film The Great Debaters, directed by Denzel Washington in 2007, King’s words were particularly relevant. James Farmer Jr., the main character of the film, argues King’s point in the final debate about civil disobedience between Harvard and Wiley College. Although the Wiley debaters rely effectively on the strategy of ethos, the keys to their victory are the strategies pathos and logos.
During the 1930’s, African Americans were subjected to the harsh racial discrimination of the Jim Crow South, suppressing the progress and idealisms of influential African Americans. However, a few were brave enough to tackle the oppressive grasp of racism through powerful speeches. The debate team from Wiley College in the film The Great Debaters, directed by Denzel Washington, utilized the power of words to heroically fend off the despotic nature of the southern hostility towards African Americans. Among the members of the team, James Farmer Jr. is the epitome of heroism that lead the Wiley College debate team to ultimate victory at Harvard University. James Farmer Jr. demonstrates heroism when he kept his word to Melvin Tolson.
Furthermore, interviews with teachers who worked at T.C Williams in 1971 share a similar view with the Titans. Joann Patton, a former English teacher at T.C Williams, stated "Students adjusted pretty well to the integrated situation. The kids behaved a whole lot better than most of the adults" (Merron, 2002). Though Howard claims his depiction is correct despite the claims of the players, reports from those at T.C Williams in 1971 beg to differ. Gettysburg isn 't the only instance of the movie inaccurately displaying racial tensions.
One character accuses the other of something, to which he or she must immediately respond and defend himself or herself. The statements of each character are dependent on what the other characters have said before them; that is to say, most conversations between the African-American characters throughout the course of the play only occur due to some sort of accusation or inflammatory remark from another African-American
This action by the school board resulted in the demotion of the schools seasoned, Hall of Fame nominee; Bill Yoast (Caucasian). Coach Boone suggests to Yoast that he stay on as assistant head coach. Boone tells Yoast “I think it would go a long way to smooth things over” Yoast initially refuses but is humbled when his team communicates their plan to boycott the school if he can’t be their coach. What follows is a series of racially driven conflicts and it’s up to Boone to get them to see beyond race and work towards a common goal as a united team as they leave for football camp.

In the film Remember the Titans, racial prejudice and stereotypes are evident throughout. At the start of the movie we are taken back to 1971 where we are introduced to the town of Alexandria in Virginia and the new high school that resides in it, as two schools recently combined to form one desegregated student body called T.C. Williams High School. Football is an immense part of this town and for the people residing there. Shortly into the film, head football Coach Bill Yoast, nominee for the Virginia High School Hall of Fame, is demoted to assistant football coach and the school board hires an African American man by the name of Herman Boone to take his place. This starts an uproar in the Alexandria community as desegregation hadn't been
Boaz Yakin, the director of “Remember the Titans”, tell us the story of an American football team of a recently integrated high school. The team transitions from hating each other to becoming a brotherhood. A turning point in this transition is the run to Gettysburg, where coach Boone leads the boys on an early morning run before delivering a powerful speech. After this scene the boys start to respect each other, respect the coach and overcome adversity. Using visual and verbal techniques, Yakin teaches us to respect everyone no matter what race, and to be resilient in the face of adversity.
