Eric Arthur Blair wrote under the pen name of George Orwell. Orwell used his writing to show how people were being treated unfairly by governments. George Orwell’s classic literature novel Animal Farm shows how people, in this case animals, are tricked into allowing themselves to be mistreated by a government. The novel Animal Farm is about a pig named Napoleon who slowly takes over a farm using propaganda and cruel punishment to keep control over the farm. The first winter after the pigs took over, the animals on the farm had very little to eat and food was scarce and the animals began to question if the boar running the farm named Napoleon was able to run the farm successfully. Napoleon in order to gain control he had the dogs kill the animals who protested against him; four pigs, three hens, a goose and three sheep ( Blair, page 59). After the other animals had witnessed the killings the animals remembered when there were times of bloodshed, but now with the pigs the bloodshed seemed much worse( Blair, page 60). In addition, when Napoleon’s leadership was threatened by Snowball, Napoleon ordered his dogs to attack Snowball who barely managed to escape from the dogs (Blair, page 38). Some may say that Mr. Jones killed animals on the animal farm. However, Mr. Jones never killed any animals to show power like Napoleon did he killed animals for food that was necessary in order for the men on the farm to live.
