Gatsby Analysis Essay During the 1920s, the American dream was popularized as having every opportunity and the freedom to succeed, many people did not have this, so this is what they strived for. This is the case for Jay Gatsby in the novel The Great Gatsby, who chooses to re-invent his life from a penurious past to become one of the richest in Long Island, New York. Gatsby was able to re-invent himself in ways that changed his reputation, his lifestyle, and how he treated others. Jay Gatsby built his reputation in New York, so much so that you would not know his real name was James Gatz from the Midwest. When expressing his past, he states “I was brought up in America but educated at Oxford.” Later in the book, Gatsby explains he was only at Oxford for six months. He devised an elaborate story to boost his reputation on Long Island. Jay Gatsby was able to magnify his reputation by hiding his past through money. Despite only attending Oxford for a whopping six months, Gatsby was smart and eager to change his lifestyle from a young age. At his funeral, his father shows up and voices “Jimmy was bound to get ahead”. He always had some resolves.” Since Gatsby was poor, his father knows he is embarrassed by where he comes from, so he decides to change his life.
