Meyer Lansky was born somewhere around 1902 in Hronda Belarus. His real birth name was Meyer Suchowljansky. His name was later Americanized to Meyer Lansky after immigrating to America. His parents could not recall his birth date so his parents set July 4th, 1902 as his birthday for his immigration records. He arrived in America in 1911. He grew up with his mom and dad. His father earned a job as a garment presser. Lansky grew up on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. He did not have a typical childhood. He faced horrible violence as a child. After graduating from 8th grade, he quit school. He then went on to get a job and earned a position as a mechanic. He formed a gang with Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel and Charles “Lucky” Luciano. His first crime was an auto theft.

In order for him to migrate, he had to obtain a citizenship. Lansky tried for two years to obtain a citizenship because it was consistently repudiated due to his criminal record.
