In the book “No Crystal Stair”, many people were motivated by Malcolm X’s philosophy “by any means necessary” more than Martin Luther King Jr.’s philosophy. The way I see the Civil Rights Movement, society moves forward farther using violence. A nonviolent approach was not a good as a violent approach because violence was the key to the Civil Rights Movement. Also, Lewis Michaux, the main character, supports Malcolm X’s philosophy a little more than Martin Luther King Jr’s. Reasons being that it made the black community more brave, made them grow and fight for what they believe in, and nonviolence lead to death. He was also wondering what should he do with the bookstore when he was gone. Should he close it up or should he give it to his son? Lewis thinks about it and he wanted to change. He had to give up his bookstore because he was evicted. Lewis was grateful for the bookstore and the people who went there saying, “thank you for the support over these many years” (148). After the bookstore was sold, Lewis made the black community grow and change the way they thought. He was the person who encouraged it. Martin Luther King Jr. was a pacifist and he avoided conflict as many times as possible. Martin Luther King Jr. took a long time to get his point across, which lead him to his demise by not using violence. Lewis, was not a pacifist but he was not a fighter, he only used violence in a dire situation. Nonviolence lead to more problems. Lewis had people protect him because people would try to sabotage is bookstore. If he did not have people who protected him, they used violence, he probably died or gotten hurt.
