Sometimes situations occur in our lives that happen because of chance awhile other times they occur because of a choice made. This is especially true with Eliezer in Elie Wiesel’s Night. Eliezer has a series of events happen to him that have happened be chance or by choice. Eliezer never asked to be a Jew in a time when it was so fatal to be one but it happened by chance. In the book he continued to make the most important choice at that time: to stay alive. Over all some choices are made however chance played a bigger part in his life.
Eliezer does make many decisions that could help or hurt him in the story. The biggest choice he makes is to stay alive. For example he was born to a Jewish family in a time when they were hated so much and blamed for so much. He was meant to be born to the family and at the time he was for a reason. He did choose to be taken to concentration camps and labor camps. This is a choice that made him into who he is. This was not the most positive situation that anyone could be on but it happened to him by chance. He will never forget that time and what happened to him. In the book it says, “Never shall I forget those things, even where I condemned to live as long as God himself”. (34) It also happened by chance that he injured his foot and had to have an operation on it. He did not chose to have to evacuate with the other prisoners instead of stay with the sick and injured that were liberated two days later. Although His father lied about his age, it happened by chance and less by choice that he lived as long as he did. It was his fate that he was finally liberated and survived the holocaust then later wrote this
