Through my participation in Central Michigan University’s Pre-PT Club, I discovered seven crucial aspects of professionalism in physical provided by the APTA. When it comes to this semester, things for me are going well. So far in the course, I have been able to get all my homework and reading entirely on time and not rushing things at the last minute. As I sit in the basement of the Lilly Library, surrounded by friends who have become family in a few short months, covered in calculus and EQ notes, and listening to some Duke Ellington jazz music for my Music 101 class, I can’t help but reflect on what this year has meant to me and my development as a student, athlete, brother, friend, and person. I am first generation college student. I started Florida Gulf Coast University four years after I migrated from Jamaica along with my Dad, in pursuits of “an opportunity”- something that is very scarce outside of the continental United States. Before coming to FGCU, I went to Miramar High School; I graduated with honors and promised my Dad that within four years I would bring home my bachelors degree in Finance. August 14th, 2013 marked move in day at Florida Gulf Coast University. My first few weeks at Florida Gulf Coast University introduced me to the dreariest days and nights of my life.
Every student may have a different aspect of life and school, but there is a mutual understanding between every student and staff. Regardless of what your age, race, gender, or ethnicity, the school makes every attempt to better everyone equally. I share this sentiment about the school to everyone in hopes that someday I can come back and teach on this campus. By becoming an instructor, I wish to inspire students like me to reach outside of themselves and pursuit their dream much like I am today. After my last semester, I will miss this community; taking only with me the thought that it saved me and changed my life for the better.
I am writing this paper after successfully completing my first half year of college on campus at Dakota Wesleyan University. I have done numerous things here during the fall semester of 2015 that have helped me mature and ultimately grow into a stronger person. My Learn Strong 101 class taught me some essentials that helped me with getting through the semester. One of the first things that I completed in this class was campus clarity. I think that this was a very helpful program.
Professionalism whether in the workplace or an academic setting can easily be deemed comparable. Both settings necessitate the adherence to a set of values. These values may be established through a formally agreed upon code of conduct as exemplified in a work or student handbook or through the informal expectations of colleagues, clients, professors, or peers. The fundamental standards of professionalism include having respect for yourself, your colleagues, the material you are learning and your professors. There are many characteristics that contribute to being professional.
I feel that the stuff that I took out of being at Mayville was tremendous, because I learned that you need to find a way to work with people you don’t like and it is a real life experience. Most people in their job their is going to be someone they don’t like and will have to work with them. Know I also learned that the hard you work the easier it will be for you to be successful in that class because if you slake you will not be as successful. Know in class we are getting late slips, so if we don’t finish an assignment without the late slip it is an automatic 0%, and it is a way that they are easing our way into high school so we are prepared if we don’t finish an assignment we get a zero.
Joining organizations at school is a very common subject to be conversed around college, even before college. There will be constant rambles from advisors and other upper-classmen to join clubs and organizations as a first-year student in college. Throughout college, this type of concern is something everyone generally informed of. Even through all the important reminders and advices that students receive from others, there are still many students who are refusing to execute the first step toward joining an organization due to lack of motivation, knowledge, or courage. However, VSA, otherwise known as Vietnamese Student Association, is not just any typical organization on campus, it’s a family.

Throughout my second semester I have grown in investigating the world and communicate ideas and grown my knowledge and College Career Readiness as a student. This semester has me stressed more than I have before, so stressed about AP exams and college readiness.
One of my priorities would that everyone gets involved in the hall activities and come out of their shell. It took my RL weeks before I started participating more in the hall and dorm activities. Professionalism by definition is "the skill, good judgment and polite behavior that is expected from a person who is trained to do a job well." The American Physical Therapy Association states that "there are seven core values that comprise professionalism in physical therapy: accountability, compassion, excellence, professional duty, social responsibility, integrity, and altruism. " For some professionalism can simply mean that the individual has a high level of standards, but for others, the term might hold a different meaning. One might infer that there can be several different definitions that apply to this term, which poses the question, what is professionalism in the context of being a student in a doctor of physical therapy degree program?
