Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, slavery was practiced in the American colonies. Black slaves were also mainly working on the tobacco, rice, and indigo plantations of the southern coast. A lot of slaves lived on large farms or small plantations. Most people that owned slaves had owned less than 50 slaves. People had used a very insulting word for the blacks called “nigger which states a sign of racism. (Twain 5)
