The Paper is a 1994 comedy drama, which was directed by Ron Howard. Ron Howard is very dynamic as he is a famous director and actor. This film stars tons of Hollywood gems, such as: Michael Keaton, Robert Duvall, Glenn Close, Marisa Tomei, Randy Quaid, Jason Alexander, and many more. The film starts off with the editor of the New York Sun Henry Hackett, who loves his job and will do anything for it but his long hours and low wages he gets paid are not cutting it. The managing editor Alicia Clark and Henry do not like each other. Martha, Henry’s wife is pregnant and annoyed at Henry because she believes that he worries about his job more than her. Henry Hackett is portrayed as the good journalist while Alicia Clark is portrayed as the villain. This was the first time we got to see a woman in charge of things playing the villain, in the movies we watched. She was in charge of making cutbacks for the newspaper. It blends into what we talked about in class how editors were powerful decision makers and can stop a story if they wanted. Alicia even has an affair in the movie, which made her portrayed as not only a villain but also as sleazy. Alicia allows a front-page headline that untruthfully portrays the teenage boys as murderers. It shows how she has no ethics for most of the film, and a lack of credibility. She does however have a change of heart at the end when she decides to change the front page of the paper. In this film Henry struggles between home and work life. This is shown at in the scene where his wife becomes frustrated with him and thinks he cares more about work then her. The role of African Americans in the film was shown as being accused of something they did not do. Overall, journalists seem to be portrayed as heroes in the film because even the villain in The Paper does something good in the
