Social expectations rebelled against in “The Book Thief” Society is a variety of theories in the government. It is the regularities, customs and ground rules of human behavior. Each factor listed shows an insight on the government’s power over an individual. Within Marcus Zusak's novel, "The Book Thief", the people of Molching Germany choose to go against the social expectations created by the Nazi's in order to honour their families, as well as be true to their inner values, allowing them to prove that good will prevail over evil. To begin with the most obvious point, the value of family was most clearly shown when Rudy's father was sent off to war for denying the Nazi's request to send Rudy to a Hitler youth school. After the nurse had analyzed Rudy and two other boys, and soldiers come to the Steiner's door to send Rudy to a special Nazi training school because of his athletic skills and intelligence. Rudy's father, Alex Steiner had refused to let them take Rudy "Please, take me, I'm ready now"(Zusac 411), prepared to be sent off instead of Rudy. At this point of time, family values are clearly shown. Many families at the time had lost their sons due to sending them to the Nazi training school and it was expected by for them to send them at the Nazi's request. So, when Alex said no it rebelled against the Nazi expectations and he was prepared to pay the consequences for it. Though, Alex was not the only father to rebel for their children. Earlier in the novel, Hans had noticed that Liesel had something bothering her. She finds out that Hitler had taken her mother and says that she hates Hitler.
