The obligation to help others in danger extends beyond the immediate act of assistance. It ripples outward, inspiring and motivating others to follow suit. The power of collective action cannot be underestimated. In Barbara Lazear Ascher’s essay “On Compassion” she analyzes the idea of compassion primarily through the way society treats the homeless/less fortunate. Using anecdotal narratives and rhetorical questions, she contemplates on the true motives behind compassion and encourages her audience to ponder on this same situation. * Ascher begins her essay with an anecdote about a homeless man approaching a mother and her baby using eloquent, high-level language. As she begins to describe the man, she states that his “carefully plaited dreadlocks bespeak a better time” (paragraph 1).
Standing up for a classmate or even participating in a school fundraiser, could be examples of showing this kind hearted side, no matter if you are recognized or rewarded for accomplishing it. No matter who you are, no matter, what you look like or what you do, you can make a difference. Frederick Douglass is a significant and appreciable figure also. Douglass was a former American slave who managed to escape his life of restriction to attain freedom in a free state. This was an onerous thing to do but all it took was a little hope and perseverance.
In particular, a benefit that would result from the law is that it will encourage citizens to take action and help the individuals that are in desperate need. When people begin to make better choices and become involved, many innocent lives will be saved. In addition to this, the article “If Decency Doesn’t, Law Should Make Us Samaritans” by Gloria Allred and Lisa Bloom, the authors assert that “The real reason individuals do not reach out is because they feel disconnected from strangers in need... If each of us recognized a moral responsibility to come to the aid of others, we would all gain the benefits of a stronger and safer community” (Allred and Bloom 2). This quote says that people do not help others in need because they are not close to each other but if a federal law was created that said they were obligated to give assistance to those in imminent danger, everyone would benefit from it and communities would be much safer. Despite the fact that someone who is in a crisis and is in need of help might be a stranger, that should be no excuse for one to not lend a hand.

Morally, Jay Gatsby did not wish to pursue the American dream, he found himself looking for an answer that made him the man he was, the self-made wealth and happiness that he created was all a facade for a hazy future that he expected to come true, which never did. The ideal representation of Gatsby is the pursuit of your dream. Inquiring how he felt throughout the story, Gatsby’s dream was unachievable through the crooked ways he tried to win over Daisy. The front Gatsby put forth of achieving the American Dream was legitimate, however, he did not achieve his true happiness in life. The justification of how Jay pursued the American Dream was not behind his perspective as a bootlegger but his perspective as a man who was deeply in love.

Being able to decide for ourselves what we are compassionate about shows who we really are. When we are compassionate about something, our actions follow right along with it. I personally feel when working with someone, you grow a tight bond that you nor your patient will ever forget. Their lives are in your hands, so make every word and action count because you never know when their last breath will be. Being a nurse is very challenging and comes with everyday obstacles.
