Women’s rights activist, Susan B. Anthony once said, “Women must not depend on the protection of men, but must be taught to protect herself” (“Susan”). Susan B. Anthony spent her life standing up for women’s suffrage. Anthony is a source of inspiration around the world. Civil disobedience is when a person or group protests a law that they find morally wrong. The person is usually peaceful and will accept whatever consequences arise due to breaking the law (Suber). Civil disobedience is often an effective means of changing laws and protecting liberties. It also embodies an important moral concept that there are times when law and justice do not coincide and that to obey the law at such times can be an addiction of ethical responsibility (Starr). …show more content…

Anthony’s role in civil disobedience, one must first have knowledge of her personal life. Susan B. Anthony was born in Adams, Massachusetts to a Quaker household on February 15, 1820 (Susan B.). Anthony was the second eldest of eight children but only six of which lived to become adults. As her father was a mill owner, the Anthony’s moved to Rochester, New York to start a farm (Susan Anthony). The Anthony family were Quakers which means she was brought up with activist traditions. Due to being from an equally accepting family, Anthony developed moral standards that she abided by. (Susan B.). Since her Quaker background was a big part of her, her family sent her to study at a Quaker school near Philadelphia. Although her family agreed with women’s education, hers was short lived when she returned home to help her family with their farm and helped make ends meet when their farm was failing. Eventually Anthony started working as a teacher (Susan Anthony). Susan B. Anthony had her first paid position when she became head of the girls’ department at Canajoharie Academy (Susan B.). Being one of the well know feminists of the United States, Anthony was dedicated to her work and wanted people to see she didn’t need a man to be whole. Susan B. Anthony was never
