‘Is the ANZAC legend a myth, or is it an accurate portrayal of Australia’s fighting men in WW1?’

World War 1 began in 1914 and continued throughout until 1918. World War 1 took place across multiple locations, such as the Western Front, Eastern Front and Sea. The first major military action fought by the Australian and New Zealand troops was during World War 1. The Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, known as the ANZAC’s had an important role in Gallipoli. The Gallipoli Campaign was carried out by the Allies, in hope of invading Turkey. Invading Turkey was important, as the Dardanelles Strait was the easiest way of supplying goods to Russia. Australia saw this as a chance to represent itself. The Anzac Legend was reaffirmed after the eight months of fighting in Gallipoli. These qualities were demonstrated among the first arrival on the Gallipoli shores. (awm.com.au, n.d ). The Anzac Legend was made up of entirely volunteers. Most of the Anzac legends signed up for war; as they saw it as an exciting journey, as well as this, others signed up to escape drought conditions experience at home (Australia.gov.au, n.d).The Anzac legends had to go through many obstacles to fight, such as climbing steep cliffs and dodging bullets of the enemies. (Australia.gov.au, 2015) “It is a legend of free and independent spirits who discipline derived from less military formalities and custom than from the bonds of mateship.” (Keating, 1993). This primary quote clearly shows that the Anzac Legend had a strong promise of mateship, then military formalities and customs. This was a strong characteristic that represented the Anzac legends. These Anzac legends only intended to show their bravery and strength on the battlefield, but upon their return they were honoured as the Anzac Legends. Characteristics like courage, endurance and mateship played a major role of creating the Anzac
