The Outsiders written by S.E Hinton , published in 1967. This novel tells a story about the Greasers and the Socs which are two opposing gangs that are in constant fights and do not get along.The greasers get treated poorly and disrespected constantly since the socs look down on them and treat them differently since they are not as privileged as the socs. The socs are rich kids that live on the west side of Tulsa , Oklahoma and the greasers were poor kids that lived on the East side providing for each other's needs. The conflict between the Greasers and the Socs is one of the most important themes in the novel. Ponyboy is the narrator , main character , protagonist , and youngest in the gang .He lives with his brothers Darry and Sodapop since his parents were killed in a car accident. SodaPop , Ponyboy’s 17 year old brother. He has dropped out of school and works at a local gas station.He is also known as " movie star" handsome. Darry is Ponyboy's older brother and also the legal guardian of Ponyboy and Sodapop. He's 20 years old and works a lot to provide for them. Dally, 17 years old, originally from New York. Tougher than the others in the gang and even has been to jail. Johnny is known as the gang's "pet". He's 16 years old , physically small , and sadly comes from an abusive home. (26) , Ponyboy states “ Dallys ok” , “John said defensively , and I indeed. You stick up for your buddies no matter what they do.When you're in a gang , you stick up for the members”. Another example of loyalty in this novel is when Ponyboy feels ill and Dally is injured , but both still fight in the rumble against the socs because they always have each other's back. The relationship between the members demonstrates a perfect example of loyalty. One more quote of loyalty that is shown in the novel on chapter 12 , page 173 Darry quotes “If we don’t have each other, we don’t have anything.” This is a very powerful quote and shows how much the greasers love each other. It explains that even though they are alone and everyone looks down on them, at least they have each other and for that reason they need to stay
