In A Yellow Raft in Blue Water by Micheal Dorris, the three main characters go through many difficult conflicts. Some conflicts are internal, while others are external. Some of Rayona’s struggles include when Father Tom sexually abused her and how she feels different than everyone else. Christine struggles with her supposedly dying in a couple months and suicidal thoughts.. Finally, Ida’s struggles include taking care of a kid that isn't hers and not liking Clara. The three women’s struggles weave together like a braid and demonstrate their strength as individuals and as a family. One struggle Rayona went through was Father Tom sexually abusing her. For example,Rayona says “His hips jerked against me” (Dorris 60) and Father Tom says “Rayona we have experienced an occasion of sin” (Dorris 61). This is important to the story because it shows how mentally strong Rayona is. Another struggle she went through was feeling out of place. In the story it says, “When the doctor came into my room with his long face and the news I had burned myself out and probably wouldn't live another six months''(Dorris 234) and another quote that infers this is, “You'll have to make some provisions for her. " Nothing immediate of course, but…..” (Dorris 235). It is important because it shows the reason why she was acting like she was Rayona point of view. One mre struggle she went through was going through suicidal thoughts and depression. For example she said, “Tomaca is where i’ll complete my own circle”(Dorris 242) and she also said “Get out, I didn't want rayona with me when I found the cleared ground” (Dorris 245). This explains why in Rayona pov she was always running away because she had too many emotions going through
