Night is a memoir about a young Jewish boy named Elie Wiesel and how he struggles to survive the Holocaust. Elie is from Sighet, Romania and he was a very religious young boy, but then his family and all the townspeople of Sighet are deported to Auschwitz. Elie and his father are separated from the rest of their family and are sent to go work in the concentration camps. Due to the internal conflicts Elie faces while in Auschwitz, his beliefs and view of self change. While Elie is in Auschwitz's, an Oberkapo, two adult men, and a young pipel were charged and arrested for possessing firearms and for sabotaging the central electric plant. Elie’s explains to the readers that during the hangings that he and some fellow inmates wonder, “Where is God? And from within me, I heard a voice answer: Where he is? This is where - hanging here from this gallows…” (Wiesel 65) Originally Elie was a very religious student, he studied and prayed all day and all night long. Now Elie is question God and everything that he stands for. Elie and many of his fellow Jews were starting to lose their religion and beliefs because of all the horror they see. This conflict changes Elie’s belief in God because God can not prevent this kid from suffering he believes God is dead. Months later Elie and his father are deported to Buchenwald, his father was in terrible shape, but Elie struggles to realize that his father is going to die. On January 28th, 1945 Elie is taking care of his father and night falls, so he heads to his bunk and goes to bed.
