In the late 1940’s, Senator Joseph McCarthy began a tyrannical attack against the people of America. McCarthy went through the nation and accused powerful people of being a part of the communist party. McCarthy had no grounds for his accusations; he would just keep accusing people until they broke down and just said they were a communist to end his attacks. His form of “trial” worked until he tried to accuse Arthur Miller, a brilliant play write, of being a communist. Arthur Miller was livid and fought against Senator McCarthy and his House Committee on Un-American Activities the only way he knew.
When a trial is going on the court needs to have solid evidence before accusing anyone of being guilty or not guilty. The Salem Witch trials was a historical event that took place in Salem, Massachusetts, where a group of girls were accused of witchcraft, and later they all testified to the activity of witchcraft, and for this they were not punished for their wrong doings; however, everyone else that was accused and did not testify were punished for telling the truth about not being involved in witchcraft. The ultimate responsibility for the deaths of the innocent Puritans is borne by Danforth because he makes decisions without having solid proof, he believes the other girls over Mary Warren , and he has all the power to decide who gets to die or survive. One reason why Danforth is responsible for the death of the innocent Salemites is because he makes decisions without having solid proof. During the whole trials Danforth does not believe anyone who does not testify to witchcraft because he believes the girls that accused the innocent puritans.
In Arthur Miller's play The Crucible we are introduced to a few dynamic characters, but the character that I will be focusing on is Judge Danforth. Thomas Danforth who’s in his sixties, and is very gullible is the deputy Governor of Salem, Massachusetts. We are first introduced to Judge Danforth in Act Three of the play. He is the Judge of The Witch trials alongside Judge Hathorne. Our first meeting with Danforth is in the courtroom.

Thus, in 1692 when accusations of witchcraft were made in Salem, Massachusetts, some grew power hungry accusing and persecuting innocent people. One such persecutor was Deputy Governor Danforth. While believing he was serving God and eradicating evil from his town, he presided over a court that took twenty-one innocent lives and condemned several more.
Essentially, who is responsible for the unfortunate events that took place in the novel “The Crucible”? Throughout the book, Mr.Danforth, who serves as the Judge of the courtroom, seems to be held accountable for numerous misfortunes. Danforth’s biased opinions and leniency towards Abigail led him to make sporadic decisions and impulsive judgements when it came to the accusations of others. Hale, a devout reverend, also plays a prominent aspect in the blame game. However, unlike Danforth, Hale actually searched for the truth and craved justice for others.
In our society, many people rely on the power of law and justice in order to protect themselves. Some powerful men abuse and misuse their power which brings many unfairnesses and tragedies. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, Judge Danforth is a deputy governor of the state, and he is also the judge for the witchcraft trail. Judge Danforth represents the authority and supremacy in the entire play. Throughout the play, Danforth’s tyrannous and stubborn personality caused many wrong decisions that he made in the court.
Judge Danforth’s unwavering egotism culminates in the unfortunate deaths of Salem townsfolk. Arthur Miller’s classic play The Crucible demonstrates how the actions of one person can affect many others. Judge Danforth cares more about his own reputation than what is right. Often times people try to think of what is right instead of saving their own face, Judge Danforth is an exception to this stereotype. The Salem Witch Trials were a horrible time where many people lost their lives due to an unjust court system.

In The Crucible by Arthur Miller the head judge, Danforth, is both feared and looked up upon. While presented with the challenge of ruling all of the witch trials, Danforth takes the position with confidence. Danforth sets all of the rules for the trials including one that dismisses ones hanging if they plead guilty. Slowly, everyone becomes less fond of Danforth as they realize their ignorance, however, Danforth fails to do the same. Danforth’s superstition and arrogance obscures his view to the law and causes unjustful hangings.

A big question has been lingering in the air for quite sometime as to who is responsible for all the deaths from the the book called The Crucible, which took place during the Salem Witch Trials back in 1692. The many deaths in the Salem witch trials was the fault of many people but the ultimate responsibility for the deaths of the innocent Puritans is borne by Judge Danforth because according to his rules of the court, if anyone was accused of being a witch and denied you would be hung, also because of his ignorance, he allowed abigail and the other girls to have the power of anyone in the village killed, and he was very reluctant to listen to the opinions of anyone other than the girls on the matter of the Salem Witch Trials. Danforth: Judge, Jury, and Executioner Judge Danforth’s position in the crucible is the Judge assigned to the proceedings of the Salem witch trials. Instead of treating this immense responsibility with the respect and restraint that is needed, Danforth abused his power by betraying the people of Salem and the Law. He did not listen to the people of Salem defending themselves before inevitably being sent to death; and he cared more about his reputation and the law than he did about peoples’ lives. Danforth was a ruthless power over the people of Salem he demanded respect for himself and the court; and nothing was more important than that.
