The path to one’s destiny is a long painstaking one, and is full of unpredictable events and life-devastating problems. In the stories of Bless Me Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya and Whale Rider by Witi Ihimaera, the two characters Antonio and Paikea face these certain events. Antonio wonders about being On their journey to destiny, both Antonio and Paikea have been watched over by spiritual advisors, made sacrifices in life, and struggled with problems at birth. In Bless me Ultima, Antonio’s spiritual adviser is Ultima. In the story, Ultima has loved Antonio and guided him more than both his parents combined. For example, Ultima took care of Antonio when he was mentally injured and sacrificed her safety for Antonio. Ultima says, “Always have the strength to live, love life and if despair enters your heart, look for me in the evenings when the wind is gentle and the owls sing in the hills, I shall be with you” (Anaya 261). Antonio loved her so much that he ran ten miles to keep Ultima save. Running ten miles is also dangerous. What if Tony ran and fall off the cliff, what if he trip into the river and drown or getting shot by Tenorio. Another example, he saw his brother in a strip house, in order to save his brother, he willing to lose his innocent and entered the house. On the other hand, Koro (Paikea’s grandpa) loved Paikea, but he felt that “when she was born, that’s when things went wrong for them” (Ihimaera). Even though Paikea knew that Koro rejected her, but she still love him. When the whale got stuck on the beach, people tried to get them into the deeper water but it doesn’t work. One such conflict—a multifaceted struggle that ultimately becomes one of the most prominent in the novel—concerns his religious beliefs.
