In the short stories Checkouts by Cynthia Rylant and The Girl Who Can by Ama Ata Aidoo, they have many differences and similarities. The stories are both based on two young girls who come from different backgrounds, places, and more. Checkouts are about a girl who moves to a new town and sees a boy she likes. Also, The Girl Who Can is from Africa and is showing her love for running and that her legs are okay just the way they are. Adjoa’s looks do not meet her family's cultural standards because she has thin long legs that are better for running than having a child. Also, the girl from checkouts is moving to a new town which means she has to go through the trouble of making new friends. “You’ll be lonely at first, they admitted, but you’re so nice you’ll make friends fast.” Moving is hard, especially because of how judgemental people are and how each place has a different “style.” Both girls are struggling with social award issues but people blow them off and don’t really care about that sort of problem.Moreover, they are both written from two different perspectives. In Checkouts the story is written in the 3rd person point of view about her struggling to adjust to her new home and town. The story is about her meeting a boy and both of them like each other. While, in The Girl Who Can, was written in the first-person point of view.
