Many have heard of good and evil personalities, but never with having separate identities. Homes are a true reflection of one's mind, style, and how they choose to live their life. In the case of Dr. Henry Jekyll and Mr. Edward Hyde, we understand the lifestyle one has to live during the Victorian Era. Social values throughout were creating a world in which people felt forced to choose between respect from others and their true personality traits. Dr. Jekyll, living on the higher end of the social class, cared very much about his reputation and the judgment from others, including his home. Hyde is the type of guy to go off and not be found for months at a time. He is a secretive man with absolutely no friends. Since he rarely is home, his house continues to stay looking beautiful and well-furnished. The area that Hyde’s home was in is SoHo. Soho is a crime-popular area and a scary spot to be in the Victorian Era. Mr. Hyde, like the area of his home, was not the most welcoming. He is the opposite of a warm and loving type of person. Mr. Hyde does not like to interact with people as Dr. Jekyll does. There will be no late-night parties at Hyde’s, unlike Dr. Jekyll. Throughout the book, many come to realize that Mr. Hyde secludes himself from the rest of the world. One reason for this may be his appearance. For Mr. Hyde, “he is not easy to describe. There is something wrong with his appearance; something displeasing, something downright detestable” (Stevenson 19). Hyde has been described as a scary and odd-looking man, just like where he lives in SoHo. He keeps the windows of his home shut at all times blocking out anything from the outside. Hyde does not want anyone in his house or his business. He is secretive, yet seems so much like Jekyll from the decor of his home. From the comparison of homes, it seems as if Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde have the same mind and tastes in things just as two different people. As if Hyde and Jekyll have good and evil personalities, just with different identities. Mr. Hyde is the evil side of Dr. Jekyll which makes complete sense given he lives in a dark bad area, with a dark and scary personality, making it easy and normal to hide his true identity. If Mr. Hyde stayed where Dr. Jekyll lived; he would be found guilty of in a matter of minutes for murder.
