Mexican vs Tex-Mex FoodsSome people think Tex-Mex food is the same as authentic Mexican food. However, they are wrong. Some examples of local restaurants that serve Tex-Mex food include Taco Bell, QDOBA, and Tex Mex. Some examples of local restaurants that serve authentic Mexican food include Mi Jefe in Trafalgar, Fiesta Ranchera, and The Tamale Place.Both Tex-Mex and Mexican foods have long and diverse histories. Authentic Mexican food has its roots in the Mayan Civilization. As a result of the Spanish invasion in 1521, Spanish food has had the greatest impact on traditional Mexican food. Where as Mexican food originated in Mexico which is located in Central America.The Southwestern United States and Central America can be considered neighbors. Today Tex-Mex and Mexican cuisines can be found all throughout the United States.Both Tex-Mex and Mexican foods were influenced by Spanish cuisines. Mexican and Tex-Mex use red peppers in many of their recipes. They also both use flour tortillas. At the same time Mexican and Tex-Mex dishes are very different. Mexican dishes use white cheese, queso, while Tex-Mex uses yellow cheese. In Tex-Mex cuisines cumin is commonly used, however traditional Mexican recipes rarely use it. While they both use beans Tex-Mex typically uses canned beans and Mexican dishes use fresh beans. While the ingredients might differ their cooking styles are very similar. Tex-Mex and Mexican dishes are both similar and different in many ways. While they both make tacos one traditionally uses hard shells while the other uses soft shells.
