Arthur Miller’s piece of historical fiction, The Crucible, is a play in which it tells the story of the Salem witch trials from a fictional storyline, but the characters are based on real people, just with different actions. The movie The Crucible is similar to the play and is unique because it is a movie that was written by the same author who wrote the book that the movie was based off. In the movie, Miller makes some changes to the play; changes such as: making the scenes go out of order, making characters that were only mentioned or had few lines in the play, have lines or more lines in the movie, and by changing the settings of some scenes. The first change that is made is that the scenes were out of order. By doing this, Miller allows the movie to have a better background, in case viewers did not know about the play and were unaware of what was going to occur. He made characters that had no lines in the play, have lines in the movie. He as well made characters that had few lines, have more, such as the character Martha Corey. Martha had three lines in the play, but in the movie at least double that and she was in other scenes as well that she was not in, in the play. This adjustment of the characters allows the viewer to get a better sense of what was going on and what choices were being made through all the witch hysteria. The effect of this also allows more entertainment for the viewer and it as well gives the viewer a better understanding of the character's personality that they would not get, if the characters followed the actions that they did in the play.
