One of his major stories is: “The Raven” this story is considered a great American literary work. Poe started to write about death and loss and was very successful with his new theme and style. Some of the most successful stories are: “The Tell Tale Heart,” “The Cask of Amontillado,” “The Pit and the Pendulum,” “The Masque of the Red Death,” and “The Fall of the House of Usher.” These stories show how talented Poe was when his stories focused on horror.
In this analysis I want to focus on how Poe’s writing in The Raven progressively gives the reader the feeling that the narrator turns insane. How does he create the progression from a seemingly normal man to an insane one? Firstly I would like to start off with the effects of repeating the last line of each stanza in The Raven. Throughout the poem Poe follows the rhyme scheme ACBCCC ,which puts quite a heavy focus on the last lines of each stanza.
But, he left UV and joined the army. When John Allan died, Poe was discharged from the army. Even though Poe had difficulties he continued writing and publishing some of his masterpieces. Poe creates a tone and mood, using auditory imagery, characterization and repetition. To begin with, Poe has used similar tone and mood in “The Raven” and “Tale-tell heart” creating literature elements but also creating some differences in both stories.
This story of death works out, because Edgar Allen Poe gives good use to author’s craft. Edgar Allen Poe uses imagery, symbolism, and setting to create an effective story. In the “Masque of the Red Death” Poe uses description to give imagery.
The Raven crafts the idea of suspense by using a range of different types of literary features. The use of hyperboles creates more suspense because the more exaggeration used grips the reader in more. Describing the Raven as “Ghastly, Grim and ancient” (8) makes the idea that the author is trying to get through, more coherent as Poe is offering more description. The way Poe repeats his “Sorrow for the lost Lenore” (2) helps embed the idea that he misses Lenore but it also makes the reader wonder where she went, why she left and why she is so important, which creates suspense. The way Poe uses repetition and pathos when he is trying to get an idea through is very prominent.
Edgar Allan Poe The Masque of the Red Death Prospero knows of the death in his village, he uses his wealth to lock himself away from it, he uses it as a self-defense against the illness that is spreading and stays in his castle. When Prospero thinks it is safe he throws a party, so show off, to be arrogant that he has not gotten sick, and to show everyone that is beneath him. As the night goes on he has an uninvited guest appear, the guest goes from room to room and finally Prospero catches him in the black and red room and confronts him and when he does, he dies. When everyone else confronts him, they realize there is no one under the mask, and they die.
Throughout history, we have came across many authors with different writing styles, word choice,or unique ways of interpretations. Edgar Allen Poe is one author who stands out to me the most. He has a unique and dark way of writing his stories and it appeals to the readers emotion and drama. He has a recurring theme of death and lost love, and in “The Tell-Tale Heart” Poe writes about murder, insanity, obsession and guilt. His use of symbolism and point of view is another reason what makes Poe one of the greatest.

Poe decided his effect was the death of a beautiful woman, stating that “When it most closely allies itself to Beauty: the death, then, of a beautiful woman is, unquestionably, the most poetical topic in the world — and equally is it beyond doubt that the lips best suited for such topic are those of a bereaved lover,” (Philosophy of para. 19). The Raven was written backwards, the third to last stanza was written first hand.
It has so many different characteristics within it and makes it irresistible to read. The way he uses suspense to confuse and scare the reader increases the strength of his writing. Edgar Allan Poe has a very distinct way of writing because of his drive to scare, confuse, and intrigue the reader. First, Poe uses disturbing topics and rich vocabulary to really scare the reader at times.

For most people who have had the privilege of reading the poem, would answer some questions about the poem stating that it is undoubtedly being the Poe us writing this poem with the unique propose to illustrate the strong impact left by the death of a loved one in the mind of the mourner. After his parents died, he lived with another family member who never accepted him as their own son. Later on in life, Poe had served in the military and at that point he started writing poems.
Within the Masque of the Red Death, the Raven, the Pit and the Pendulum all use unity of effect/good prose within the stories. As a reader of Poe’s stories, I feel with the characters within the story, and I feel frightened with the characters as they are going through the story.
