Edgar Allan Poe's methods of writing are present in both, "The Raven" and "The Masque of the Red Death," and, as evidence shows, can be ensured by Poe's " The Philosophy of Composition."

Poe had quite of an unusual way of writing, for the most part. Poe began his works by writing down the dénouement of his poem or short story. By doing this Poe established his unity of effect, so that he could write straight forward, without getting off track and have originality, keeping his unity of effect constant. Poe states in "The Philosophy of Composition," that " the author sets himself to work in the combination of striking events... [but,] may, from page to page, render themselves apparent."

With this, Poe began started the "Raven"
