Compare and Contrast the Spanish and the English Settlements in the New World After Christopher Columbus’ voyage, the first voyage of Europeans to reach the Americas in 1492, European immigrants started flooding into the so called “New World”. People came to the continents for different interests like profit, opportunities and religious freedom. There are two groups of Europeans that excelled in building successful settlements in their colonies: The Spanish who settled in the South and the English who settled in the North. As European colonies, the settlements had many things in common; they both had conflicts with the Native Americans and imported African slaves to meet the labor needs in plantations. However, they also had many differences; there were mixed Spanish and Native Americans in Spanish settlements. The English did not intermarry the natives. The Spanish made profit from crops but also gold and silver. In contrast, the English had to rely solely on crops because there was no gold or silver in the North. …show more content…

When the Spanish conquistador Hernándo Cortés and his troops arrived at the Aztec Empire, the Aztec emperor Montezuma first offered hospitality to the Spanish. Later when the Spanish started exploiting the Aztecs, they stoned their emperor Montezuma and rebelled against the Spanish. Despite some successful fights for the Aztecs, the Spanish took control of the empire by 1521. There were similar patterns for the English and the Natives of the North.
