Cabela’s Company History
In the year of 1961, Dick Cabela came up with an idea to sell fishing flies he purchased from a furniture show in Chicago, Illinois. After returning home to Chappell, Nebraska from his trip, he decided to run an ad in a newspaper reading: “12 hand-tied flies for $1”. Unfortunately, this ad only generated one sale for Dick Cabela.

Rethinking his tactics, Dick created a new plan and edited his ad to read: “FREE Introductory offer! 5 hand tied Flies…25c Postage…Handling’, and Dick submitted the ad to a national outdoors magazine instead this time. The orders then came rolling in.

The business moved from Dicks kitchen table, to his father’s basement, to a vacant John Deere building, to finally their main headquarters …show more content…

These features include their world-famous catalog business, a thriving ecommerce site, retails stores popping up across the nation, and also their co-branded credit card. All of these different factors have allowed Cabela’s to become the world’s foremost outfitters.

Giving back to the community that supports a business is such an integral part of business, and that is why it is one of the six principles.

Recently Bass Pro Shops has been toying with the idea of buying out Cabela’s, but in a recent news article, a reporter described all of the amazing ways that the Cabela’s headquarters in Sidney, Nebraska gives back to the community. Even though this wouldn’t be a part of the buyout price, Bass Pro Shops would have to consider this intrinsic value that Cabela’s has provided. The article in the Sun Telegraph described how Cabela’s has employs 2,000 people in a town of 6,800. Wendall Gaston, the former Mayor of Sidney, made the statement in this article:

For years it's been a partnership, Cabela's needing the city of Sidney, and the city of Sidney needing Cabela's for jobs and opportunities. It's been wonderful for people to go away to school, get an education and come home and get a really good job. We have bragged about that for a long time.
