In today’s society social media has become the forefront in entertainment and staying connected to the world around you. We live in a generation that has no sense of patience and has assimilated to having everything you could imagine in the palm of their hands. The urgency to check updates constantly has made a serious impact on the contemporary culture. The fact of the matter is that social media has the power to change society for good and bad but it also can have no impact on the world at all. It has caused many kids to become more socially awkward to the point where they will text someone in the same room as them. The comforts of these devices allow these people to avoid all human interaction and will hurt them in developing social skills needed in the future. Neglecting these building blocks can help lead to the other social media created issue of cyberbullying. One of the most known applications for this is none other than twitter, where kids are harassed on a daily basis for this, that and the other. These kids lacking social knowledge are easily targeted by those looking to make someone feel inferior. As a result of the recent attacks on Paris many social media outlets allowed you to place transparent French flags on your profile. The problem with this is that it doesn’t do anything to help alleviate the event because the people are still dying and feeling the pain. All that it really accomplishes is spreading awareness faster. Which does have some merit as it is very important to spread awareness in hopes of making a difference. As far as what social media actually accomplishes, hope can only go so far. People will still be getting shot in public across America's schools. People will still be living in fear against terrorism and radical Islam. Yes, it is good to make people aware of the problems going on in the world in which they live in but social media in my opinion does not reach a high-enough standard to qualify it as “making a difference”. Social media's main purpose which it still meets is entertainment. It was never designed to feed news and world events, but it has adapted to complete that purpose of awareness. Without social media, there will not be a change significant enough to miss it for the news updates. There will still be a TV to turn on to watch the news, radios to tune into, newspapers to read and special broadcasts to watch.
