In the words of Abigail Adams herself, ”If we mean to have Heroes, Statesmen, and Philosophers, we should have learned women. The world perhaps would laugh at me, and accuse me of vanity, but you I know have a mind too enlarged and liberal to disregard the sentiment. If much depends is allowed upon the early education of youth.” (Abigail Adams) This quotes comes from one of Abigail's many letters. It talks about how logical it is to let women get a proper education. She sends these letters to her husband John Adams who was the second president and the father of the sixth president, John Quincy Adams. She was so ingenious to have the ideas that she had. Such as her opinions on what she thinks the roles and laws for women are. She was never given the opportunity to get an education. All she was ever taught how to do was to read and to write. She even decided to “Taking a special interest in philosophy, theology, Shakespeare, the classics, ancient history and law.”(First Lady Biography: Abigail Adams). She was smart enough to know how important her education is and how much this can do for her in the future. Due to her husband being away for so long it was up to her to handle the money. She knew that women weren’t allowed to legally own land if they were married but she did anyways. She began to put away some of the land claiming as her own. She also set aside money for herself and would generously give it to friends and family who need it. This is also how she got so much money and gift to give out in her will. (woody) It can even be said that Abigail took better care of the money and the finances than John did.(woody) But when it comes to being intelligent you have to work hard no matter how terrible the conditions. When you think about women trying to get rights you would normally think of perseverance but Abigail Adams really hits home on that. “Abigail Adams was one of the first advocates of women’s equal education and women’s property rights. Adams has strong feelings about marriage and believed that women should take more part in decisions rather than simply serve their husband.” (wori) This just goes to show that she was very dedicated to what she believed and what she thought should happen. She was so prepared to give every women these rights that she told her husband what to say when writing up the new
