Without Merit is a romance novel written by Colleen Hoover. It is about a girl named Merit Voss, one of the four children who struggle with their issues. Merit is 17, she is quiet, shy, and likes to hide from reality. The ending of Without Merit concludes with Merit fed up with all the drama in her family, and starting a relationship with her love interest, Sagan. Throughout the novel, Merit is looked upon by her family as independent and emotionless. Every time Merit had an opinion on a family topic, everyone thought her disagreement was for attention or just to start arguments. Merit didn’t want to believe this and she stormed off. Merit was so hurt by this she had a mental breakdown. She goes into her room and starts writing letters to her entire household. She writes about all the things that happened to her, which were supposed to never get out, and starts drinking. Merit reveals how her dad cheating on her mom while she was sick with her nurse hurt her, she reveals the trauma from her older brother forcing her to kiss him, she talks about how her twin sister, Honor, is the favorite and she doesn’t get the same treatment. She talks about her sister lying about Sagan being her boyfriend so Merit couldn’t date him, Luck her step-uncle, and her step-mom and how she keeps her little brother Moby in a bubble. And she writes how Sagan who wasn’t even a part of the family but living with them understood her more than anyone did. After she slips the letters under the doors of her family members and Sagan, her step-uncle Luck finds her drunk. Luck wakes up her father, and soon the entire household is awake. Merit tells them she took pills and was scared to overdose. Her father makes her puke them up, and now she is left with the regret of writing the letters, drinking, taking pills, and scaring everyone. Merit ends up getting her apology from everyone and, she and Sagan end up getting
