Thomas Jefferson is known for saying “[an] educated citizenry is a vital requisite for our survival as a free [person].” This is the same as in Colin Powell’s “Kids Need Structure” TED Talk and Maria Montessori’s “Dr. Montessori’s Own Handbook,” both convey that a child’s education depends on both teacher and caregivers. Powell explains the importance of having a teacher, for example, Powell admits that, “the real answer begins with bringing a child to the school with structure in the child’s heart and soul to begin with”(Powell 44-45). Powell uses this quote to explain the importance of having a teacher because the students need to have structure in themselves before the students can get into a school system and this leads to a student having a better outcome in their future. This shows that not having a teacher can lead to serious problems and when the students come to school without structure, the students could fail/drop out of school and go to jail. Besides, Montessori also explains the importance of having a teacher is important for the student outcome. Montessori explains the importance of having a teacher, for example, Montessori admits that, “It is necessary for the teacher to guide the child without letting them feel the teacher’s presence too much”(Montessori 2-3). Montessori uses this quote to explain the importance of having a teacher because the teacher doesn’t want the student to feel overwhelmed and the teacher lets them work at their own pace to have a better outcome. This shows that having a teacher is important and this is better for the students outcome and their future so they don’t feel overwhelmed.
