Citizen/Community Engagement The mission statement of AMEXCAN is “To promote the active participation of Mexicans and Latinos in their new communities and encourage the appreciation, understanding, and prosperity of the Mexican and Latino community through culture, education, leadership, health, and advocacy”. With community engagement for their stakeholders at the core of their mission, AMEXCAN does a number of activities per year designed to increase participation both within the organization and within the broader community. As a result, they do not have competition. They work together with many other Latino-serving organizations to support, empower, and take progressive action for the Latino population in North Carolina. They even have a directory of Latino-serving organizations on their website. They are a collaborative organization that brings pro-Latino organizations together. Partners AMEXCAN partners with many different Latino-serving organizations for their various programs. They focus on building strategic networks and promoting programs to help advance their work. They prioritize achieving results and know their success depends on the quality of their partnerships. As a result, they have a wide range of partners for their programs. The AMEXCAN advocacy and civic participation program partners with immigrant rights groups including Almas Unidas, Mi Familia Vota, and Reconstruyendo NC. The internship and volunteer programs partner with East Carolina University to utilize local college students. Last fall, they hosted the “NC Latino Leadership Summit: Building a Latino Agenda” conference. They partnered with True Ridge, LILA, Centro Unido Latino-Americano, Union Latina del Este de Carolina del Norte, and El Pueblo. As the representatives of the Latino community in eastern NC AMEXCAN must navigate the difficulties of US immigration law. This includes dealing with the fear and anxiety felt by undocumented immigrants. AMEXCAN often must seek out its community members. Latino communities often for fear or for unfamiliarity do not seek out services. Additionally, it is often true that Latino communities are culturally disinclined to accept assistance. The immense pride and independence of Latino communities can serve as a major barrier to local partners and their effectiveness. AMEXCAN and its community partners combat this via the use of the snowball method. Due to the extremely close-knit nature of Latino culture, this has proven the most effective method to find and engage community members. By offering services free of charge and in complete confidentiality, AMEXCAN has earned a trustworthy reputation. By serving the community regardless of nationality, language, criminal background, and or legal status they produce confidence in the community. This trust is earned on an individual case-by-case basis. These individuals in turn carry the positivity of their experience to other members of the community. In this way, AMEXCAN can reach other intimidated or untrusting community members, whom traditional information campaigns typically can not
