Terrorism is a world-wide problem, spreading fear from nation to nation. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close emphasized the devastating repercussions a terrorist attack can have on people physically, mentally and emotionally. Victims will often grieve, try to move on, or search for some miniscule positive within the attack; trying to forget the horrible nightmare they were present in. Oskar in Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is looking for closure – he’s on a journey to find the purpose of the key in his father’s closet.
The protagonist is a very intelligent and curious child; he is engrossed with almost everything around him. Oskar’s life as a young boy was extremely tough; mourning over the death of his father, his mother also ignored him. On September 11, Oskar listened to his father on the answering machine when the World Trade Center was struck – he kept quiet about those messages and hid the machine. Black aids him in the search to discover his father’s mystery. Black helps him get over his fears – one being Oskar’s fear of height due to his father’s death. While he eventually disappears, Black was somewhat of a father figure for a very short period of time. Filling that hole for comfort that is absent from Oskar since his dad’s passing.
The most touching invention that Oskar creates is the birdseed shirt. Covered by birdseeds, it was developed so that birds can fly you to safety if you were to fall of a building. He keeps a photo of someone plummeting to his demise, thinking it could possibly be his father. In the end of his journey, Oskar doesn’t truly find anything conclusive. He collected a series of photos of a person falling off the building which he puts in reverse to create a safety net; making it appear that the man is going up the building – creating the psychological illusion that his father is
