In “The Story of an Hour”, Kate Chopin uses mood and tone to develop a relationship between the reader and the main character to show how much the character is struggling. The author wrote this story with examples of tone and mood all throughout the story. Health issues play a huge part in this story using mood. The author describes how Mrs. Mallard who is the main character suffers a heart problem and how her husband dies. When she hears about the death of her husband she goes into a very depressive state. Paragraph 4 of the story shows us the mood “There stood, facing the open window, a comfortable, roomy armchair. Into this, she sank, pressed down by a physical exhaustion that haunted her body and seemed to reach into her soul.” The tone of this section of the text shows us how badly she was affected by her husband dying. Even as spring approached she had gotten a little better but she still distanced herself and stayed inside most of the day. In paragraph 11, the author shows us the mood through this quote “She was young, with a fair, calm face, whose lines bespoke repression and even a certain strength. Things were different now she wanted too change. She was going to chage, nothing could get in her way now, no bump on the road, no sharp turn. It was her time to be the best her she could be. Even with the grief of her husbands death she wanted to be able to move on becaue life is long. She loved him so incredibly much but she realized she needed to love her and focus on herself and on her selfcare. She new that now that her husband has died she cant let that get in the way and keep her in what felt like a never ending depression. No matter how hard she tried nothing seemed to change, at one point her body failed. She died of heart disease.All because she loved her
