From the readings and class discussion done had in class, I was able to reflective everything I learnt into the play by Langston Hughes titled; “Raising in the Sun”. My point of view of this incredible play has bits and pieces of all we have learnt, from Mourning and Survival to African-American folklore. Raisin in the Sun is a marvelous example of literary classics written based on one of the famous American struggles in society that African Americans faced during the Civil Rights period. During the time of Langston Hughes, African-Americans had to struggle to survive. One of the major characters in the play, Lena gave a good example of survival. She was the mother to Walter Lee and Beneatha, who moved to the north in order to survive and improve the lives of her children. Her husband and herself were done mourning in the south and made the great migration to north. The money which was the initial situation in the play and the same cause for the conflict was the product Walter Lee’s father labor. When her daughter Beneatha, made silly comments about God, Lena struck her on the face, rebuking her for her comment. That act shows how deeply spiritual Lena was, and how she taught her children the same belief. I could relate with Lena from poems by Carlyon Rodgers, Amiri Baraka, and Charlie Braxton etc on Spirituality.
