The novel depicts the brutal reality of domestic abuse and violence against women, highlighting the devastating consequences of gender-based violence for individuals and communities. Through the characters of Mariam, Laila, and other women in the novel, Hosseini exposes the pervasive nature of patriarchal violence in Afghan society and its devastating effects on women's physical and mental health.
