In his "Obama Farewell Speech," the president implored his countrymen to hold on to and protect the ideas that America is said to cherish. Of course, this was following his eight years as president of the United States. He also gave some thought to the progress he had made since taking office. He wants to leave a message in the hearts of his devoted supporters. Obama uses rhetorical devices such as pathos, ethos, and logos to create and instill hope in the American people.
The repetition of “and then another one” in this quote emphasizes America’s habitual consistency in digressing from the real issues, like racism, and how this habit fruitless. However, Obama states that “we can come together and say, "Not this time."” Throughout paragraphs 48-51, President Obama uses anaphora when he says, “This time we want to talk about how,” before he mentions different issues of the nation. In paragraph 52, Obama reintroduces pathos, saying, “I would not be running for President if I didn't believe with all my heart that this is what the vast majority of Americans want for this country.” Then he continues, “And today, whenever I find myself feeling doubtful or cynical about this possibility, what gives me the most hope is the next generation - the young people whose attitudes and beliefs and openness to change have already made history in this election.”
The Inaugural speech by John F. Kennedy is a landmark type of speech that was given to the American populace in order to inspire confidence and to provoke them to take immediate action. His speech made extensive use of rhetorical devices in order to successfully express his goals. His stylistic devices include antithesis, parallelism, and varying structure flows in order to attract attention and to show what his service will accomplish. Kennedy details “a new generation of Americans” by contrasting old and new with his antithesis. He states, “Symbolizes an end as well as a beginning” and “signifies renewal as well as change” in order to do so.
Rhetorical Analysis Former Illinois State Senator and soon to be Forty-fourth president of the United States, Barack Hussein Obama, recounts what happened in the past to make America what is today and how he intends to maintain the ideas of America’s founding fathers throughout his term of presidency. His intended audience of the first inaugural address is the citizens of America and his purpose was to comfort them about the past and encourage the future of America. He creates a patriotic and empowering tone in order to appeal to pathos. His diction throughout the speech illustrates patriotism, allusions, and anaphoras. Obama opens his speech by discussing the views of our forebears and documents and how we have followed through with those views.
Barack Obama’s New Hampshire Primary speech has a lot of examples of allusion and intertextuality that are used to motivate the American people. Obama’s speech gives examples of past experiences that America has been through to prove that America has gone through a lot to get where it is now. He also uses allusion to give examples of areas where we can grow as a country. The speech was written in 2008, therefore he is using examples that are different than the events that might be used today.

Obama’s use of repetition in his speech makes his praise of John Kerry more powerful and by using the same words in different contexts, he shows that his ideas are important and relevant to all people. For example, “It’s the hope of slaves sitting around a fire [...] the hope of immigrants setting out for distant shores; the hope of a young naval lieutenant [...] the hope of a millworker’s son [...] the hope of a skinny kid with a funny name [...].” In this passage, the repetition of “the hope” applied to descriptions of different situations conveys the idea that everyone needs hope, and that America is a country built on hope. Obama also uses anaphora to drill certain ideas into the audience’s minds.

Obama’s purpose is to express his gratitude for his opportunity to become president and discuss his plans for economic advancement. In order to reach the American people of the U.S., Obama adopts a serious and thought-provoking tone to urge them to support his plans for advancement. Barack Obama’s win for President in 2009 was a historical moment for the United States. His inaugural speech was much anticipated, because this was going to set the tone for his presidency. His speech told the American people that improving the economy is one of his priorities, but there were also other areas he would like to improve like healthcare and the education system. This was a speech that was meant to persuade the American public to take action for them to rise as a nation again, and for them to put their trust into him.
