The Pearl by John Steinbeck provides the reader with symbols and motifs to express ideas because it gives meaning to the story. Kino the protagonist is a pearl hunter and one day finds a massive pearl called “the Pearl of the World”. As he tries to sell the pearl but has evil complications along the way. The first symbol is that an scorpions stings Kino’s child named Coyotito. “Scorpion. The baby has been stung”(6). The scorpion that stings Coyotito in Chapter 1 symbolizes that the scorpion is evil and because it has nothing to do with humans, it must come from God or the Gods. Coyotito is touched by evil, and it causes destruction of the innocence repeats itself in the destruction of Kino’s innocence by his ambition and greed. Another symbol
