Isabella Hollis McKenna 4th 3/7/23 Lewis and Clark Have you ever heard of the Lewis and Clark Expedition? The Lewis and Clark expedition, known as the Corps of Discovery Expedition, was a journey that Lewis and Clark embarked on across more than 8,000 miles, says National Geographic Kids. Lewis and Clark's transformational journey’s purpose was to find a water route linking the Columbia and Missouri river. Fortunately, this journey accomplished more than expected by exploring and creating a map detailing uncharted lands and Native American Territory. First, to understand why this is a transformational journey we have to start from the beginning. She is extremely important because without her Lewis and Clark most likely wouldn’t have made the two year journey that they did. During their trip they encountered many different Native American tribes. Since Lewis and Clark were not from the area, they did not understand the language of the Native Americans that lived there. Fortunately for them, they had Sacagawea who was a Native American woman from the Lemhi band of the Native American Shoshone tribe presented by history.com. So, Sacagawea served as a translator for the Corps of Discovery Expedition letting them make peace and be able to trade with the many Native American tribes. Not only was she a good translator, she was a highly skilled food gatherer. This also comes in handy when traveling because they obviously have to eat. Imagine you were put into an unknown forest and you had to find or make your next meal. For Lewis and Clark, it only got better. Both of the explorers received double their pay and 1,600 acres of land (history.com). So, this exploration was a win-win situation for most people involved.
