In the novel, Family written by J. California Cooper, the genre is fiction. The narrator and main characters change throughout the novel. At the beginning of the novel, the narrator and the main character of her own story was Clora. Once Clora passed away, she became the narrator and her children such as Always became the main characters. Always was a dynamic character because by the end of the story she was almost a completely different person from when she was introduced. The setting of the novel is in the 1860’s, and it takes place in the South. The social context of the novel is racism and the slavery that was occurring and how they believed whites were superior to blacks. That same day Always was raped by Doak. Always had become very hateful and she swore to destroy everything Doak had. When Always met Sue, Doak’s wife, Always thought she wasn't going to like Sue, however, they ended up becoming very good friends. Always had become pregnant from when she was raped, however, Sue was also pregnant. The two women gave birth the same day but Always switched the babies, however, she marked hers with a but that eventually looked like a mole. Sue was pregnant a second time, however, she lost her life along with the baby’s while she was giving birth. Loretta got married to Doak and moved into the house where she saw Always. Doak Jr and Soon eventually have to leave for the Civil War. While they are gone Loretta gets pregnant by one of Always’ sold children who leaves and doesn’t come back. Loretta gave birth to a girl and she named the child Apple. The resolution of the story is when the civil war ends and Always gets her freedom, and marries a man named Tom. One of the many themes is “Family bonds”. “Family Bonds” is basically the strong relationship and love between family members. I personally can relate the theme “Family Bonds” to myself, because I’m a very family-oriented person and I rely heavily on my family. Without my family, I don’t know what would be of me, they’re my support system and they help me through a lot and focus on my goals. No matter what, I know that I will always stand alongside my family because my love for them is so great. The significance of and the love is so important because sometimes family is all you’ll have to guide you through difficult times. I’ve had moments when I haven’t appreciated my family, but once certain things happen such as a fight, etc, you realize how important family really is. I have a very strong relationship with my sister, and I’m glad I do because I can trust her with a lot of things and we can help each other out because we know everything about each
