Most people know the lottery as a contest to win money. But in the short story, “The Lottery,” written by Shirley Jackson, the lottery is not a simple game competing for money. In this small village’s version of the lottery, everyone must draw out of a box, and if their family is chosen then the whole family must redraw and the death of a member is decided. After the fate is decided, the rest of the village throws stones at him or her until he or she dies. The villages reasoning of this process is they believe it guarantees a plentiful crop season.

The farming village of about 300 people started gathering up at about 10:00 o'clock. Tradition is a way in which anybody can express their beliefs and creativity in any way they want. In the short story, The Lottery, Shirley Jackson shows how blindly following tradition can sometimes be atrocious to morality. Every year, there’s a lottery held to decide the next sacrifice to the gods. It was the sunny morning of June 27th; people of a small town were gathered in the square of the village. In this small village, only two hours are needed to conduct the lottery while other villages need days, for they had larger populations.
"'Be a good sport, Tessie.' Mrs. Delacroix called, and Mrs. Graves said, 'All of us took the same chance.'" (Jackson 5). Shirley Jackson: The Lottery When you think of a tradition what comes to mind? Perhaps it is linked with your family’s core values, beliefs, or has significant meaning. Specifically, traditions are beliefs passed down from generations, they are not declared righteous or sinful, why they were born or still exist. Why do people follow traditions so mindlessly without knowing the purpose of it?
Most people do not think of small towns to be safe and very calm, but this is not the case sometimes. Shirley Jackson in her time wrote a story about a town doing something terrible. Which then became controversial with one of the most hated stories of its time. Although it was a hated story, it shed light on small towns everywhere, and people thought that just maybe a small town can be as dangerous as Jackson depicted it. “The Lottery” was the title, and as said, very controversial in its wake.
Imagine a society where killing somebody for the sake of a tradition is acceptable. In the short story “The Lottery” Shirley Jackson describes an ordinary village with normal people, but as the story progress the details of their yearly practice known as “the lottery” unravels to be more disturbing. The author subverts the readers’ expiations by persuading the reader into assuming “the lottery” is a ordinary tradition until unusual details and the behavior of the characters come into place. In her short story “The Lottery,” Jackson seemingly uses ordinary details about the setting and the townspeople to characterize her theme that although society claims to be civilized, and may appear so, it is inherently barbaric.

While this is going on, Old Man Warner, who had been in the lottery for 77 years, is talking to other villagers about how some places with young people have quit lotteries. However, Jackson is obviously not like most people. She builds up a fair amount of tension around this ritual that is taking place to make readers wonder what is going on. She uses many different techniques to show that sometimes, traditions are not always meant to go on forever.
The tradition of the lottery has been carried out for so long in this village that nobody even knows the reason for its occurring in the first place and nobody questions it. When Old Man Warner, the oldest man in the village, is told about other villages giving up the tradition of the lottery, he says that they are, “[A] pack of crazy fools [...]. There [has] always been a lottery [...]” (Jackson, 4). There is no reason why there has always been a lottery except that every year on June 27th, they held the lottery.
A man named George R.R Martin , author of , “A Dance with Dragons” , once said , “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one.” One good author to show this is Shirley Jackson, author of The Lottery. The Lottery is about is about a tradition in a village, well known as the lottery, it has a very dark twist to it. Readers will eventually realize that this is anything but the lottery when a character Tessie Hutchinson is trying to fight her fate that has come upon her.

The town’s people gather in the square and complete their annual ritual, which involves every family drawing a piece of paper from a box, with one of the papers having a symbol on it. The family whom retrieves the marked paper will endure a consequence, similar to a lottery ticket. “The Lottery” considers many aspects of gothic literature, including a bleak setting, dark events, and tortured characters.
