In The House on Mango Street, Sandra Cisneros shows how home starts as a place and ends as an emotion. Esperanza’s idea of home develops throughout the story. Esperanza’s view of home is different throughout the story. At first, she thinks of home as more of a physical place. In The House on Mango Street Esperanza and her family live in poverty. Esperanza is still in poverty, and she doesn’t like people knowing where she lives. She is ashamed of her house and tries to hide where she lives. Esperanza. In the vignette “Cathy Queen of cats” she is talking to her friends, and Cathy mentioned something about her house. She then tries to change the subject because of how ashamed she is. “Sometimes we go shopping and take her with us, but she never comes inside the stores and is she does she keeps looking around her like a wild animal in a house for the first time” (Cisneros 68). This shows Esperanza that you can need to live your own life. Ruthie is controlled by Edna and Esperanza notices this. So, she makes the decision to not be controlled like Ruthie. This is important because it shows that some peoples perspective of home could be a lot different then what yours is. If someone’s perspective of home is different, then yours and you don’t want it to be like theirs. You would have to make that decision and make sure that you aren’t like that. Esperanza is starting to embrace her situation. She has talked to many people, and she has come to the realization that home isn’t a house. It is the people you are with and the feeling you get when with them. She wants a house where she can feel at peace. A house where she can relax. “Only a house as quiet as snow, a space for myself to go, clean as a paper before the poem” (Cisneros 108). What this quote shows is that Esperanza has now accepted her home. She now knows that home is a feeling. She wants something where she can feel good about herself.
