Soul and Nature Connection: The Wind and the Sun in Coehlo’s The Alchemist Coehlo wrote a significant novel called The Alchemist. An adventurous young boy named Santiago goes on a journey looking for his dream treasure. In the novel, Santiago speaks to the wind and the sun to ask if he can turn into them to keep on going with his journey. The wind will furthermore create a sand storm called simum, and meanwhile the sun decides to transform itself into a better sun to help Santiago. I agree that Santiago has a connection with the wind and the sun involving his spiritual beliefs and connection to his soul. Santiago surely says that he and the wind are not different in any sense. There comes a point where Santiago climbs to the top of a mountain and desperately tries to get the attention of the wind. The wind feels sympathetic towards Santiago, but explains to him again that he and Santiago are two very different things. Santiago then responds: “If a person is living out his Personal Legend, he knows everything he needs to know. There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure” (146). I believe that Santiago is trying to convince the wind that when people are fulfilling their personal legend, fear is the only thing that stops them from achieving their dreams. Santiago disagrees, and explains to the sun how everyone should be better than what people were the day before.
