“10 Things I Hate About You”, a 1999 teen romantic comedy film loosely based on Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew”. It’s a classic romcom with a splash of real-world issues. I recommend this film to teenagers and young adults, who not only enjoy a great romantic comedy, but who find importance in exploring challenging worldview issues such as misogyny and expressing their feelings on it. I believe this film is perfect for that because it touches base on many great themes of breaking stereotypical norms, feminism, misogyny, and ignoring the pressures of conformity all while in a high school setting. The film begins with Cameron, a typical new kid, and Michael, a “nerd” appointed to show him around Padua High. On tour, Cameron spots Bianca Stratford, gorgeous, ditzy, and goes along with the crowd; while her sister Kat is snarky, opinionated and headstrong. This film is rated PG-13, however I believe it is better suited teenagers/ young adults when you are born the issues head on. Looking back now, Joey wasn’t just a jerk, but was projecting his own insecurities onto Kat by belittling her with misogyny. Later on, when Kat’s guard is let down, it allows Patrick in, so I find myself relating to her in a lot of ways. In movies like this, where such serious issues are addressed and sprinkled into a romance drama, the ability to find relation within the characters is incredibly important. In this particular film, they allow a lot of expression as far as emotion, and I feel a good connection to the characters. 23 years has gone by, and sadly we still face the issues addressed in the movie. The important this is that we are STILL angry, and we will continue to fight it any and every way we can.
