A Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay is about a suburban New England family struggling with their sick teenage daughter, Marjorie. It effectively blurs the lines between reality and demonic possession. Ultimately, this story depicts the root of Marjorie’s sickness as demonic possession. However, there is really no evidence in this novel that shows the presence of a supernatural entity, as everything that occurs has a human explanation. In the novel, Marjorie progressively has changes in behavior that are out of the ordinary. Marjorie mentions hearing voices in her head: “there are all these ghosts filling my head and I’m just trying to get them out…” (Tremblay 43). Marjorie faces extreme exploitation by being filmed while suffering from a mental illness and having a mental breakdown. The worst part is, this is all being filmed for the viewing pleasure of others, and so that Marjorie’s parents can be relieved of their financial burden. No one is worried about Marjorie, other than Merry, and it is not bothersome to anyone that Marjorie is being treated like a zoo animal instead of receiving the proper medical treatment that she needs. I think a large issue with reality TV shows is that those watching never take it seriously that it is about a real person’s life and is not all made up. Being behind a screen instead of interacting with the people on the show in person removes all compassion and empathy a person may have. It is very easy to not care about someone you have never met or have only seen online. It is very clear that the producers of the reality TV show, called The Possession, in this novel, do not take the show seriously, as they compare Marjorie to a witch, saying that the show should have been set in Salem, and they use improper language such as “Damn”, “Duh”, and “Ugh” (Tremblay
