“Fahrenheit 451” states, “He explores the historical climate that helped create Fahrenheit 451 and its protest against mindless conformity and censorship”(150). Ray Bradbury explores many aspects of an unprivileged life and it came to show in his novels and works. He was born on August 22, 1920 in Waukegan, Illinois, but did not live here for his whole childhood because his family was forced to move many times due to the Great Depression and he lived in such great poverty. Bradbury ended up in Los Angeles, California in 1934, where he began his writing career of over fifty novels and close to 600 short stories, in the forties and continued into the early eighties. Something Wicked This Way Comes creates a plot where characters are emotionally torn between their desires to be older and who they want to be friends with, this novel also develops a good versus evil theme. As “Something Wicked This Way Comes” explains, the main characters are Jim Nightshade and Will Halloway and they are about to turn fourteen. Their lives are about to change because “this is the week they grow up overnight.” Jim Nightshade is emotionally torn between getting older or continuing to stay friends with Will Halloway. The overall theme is that there is a tendency with good versus evil, natures of transformation, and a graceful acceptance of aging (263-280). Secondly, Dandelion Wine contains a plot where a character goes from a childlike state of ignorance to full knowledge, which correlates with a time and technology theme. As “Dandelion Wine” justifies, the plot did not follow the kind of developmental one but grew out of Bradbury’s own childhood in the Golden Years before the Great Depression. The main characters are Doug and Tom Spaulding, in which Doug moves to two different states of mind in a period of time (84-95). This novel deals with a theme of time and technology. Lastly, Fahrenheit 451 deals with a plot of book burning which represents censorship and the main character is represented against society which creates alienation and loneliness themes. As “Fahrenheit 451” states, Montag, the main character, which is a “fireman” who burns books. Montag’s wife, Mildred is represented as society because in this time period everyone is obsessed with the technology at that time and not the knowledge. By the end of this novel Montag wants to go against this utopian society and let books be allowed with their knowledge.
